New Environmental Auditors Philip Wanless and Laura Armstead
Two new Auditors have joined the Cumbria Business Environment Network (CBEN) Team at Cumbria Rural Enterprise Agency (CREA).
The team, which serves the whole of Cumbria, helps businesses to implement Environmental Management Systems and improve resource efficiency. To date they have identified over £16 million in cost savings, 70,000 tonnes of carbon savings, helped divert 59,000 tonnes of waste from landfill and saved over 700,000 m³ of water, as well as helping over 750 businesses become more resource-efficient.
Project manager Michael Hamer said, “there have been some challenges for us since the government announced its spending cuts in May, but we have worked extremely hard to minimise any impact to the support we offer to businesses. Now is a good time for businesses to step back and analyse their energy and resource use and look at their operations, and we can definitely help with that. We have a brilliant, enthusiastic and knowledgeable team, eager to help Cumbrian businesses with environmental matters, and I am delighted to welcome our two new members of staff, who will further complement the service to businesses.”
Laura Armstead holds an MSc in Resource and Environmental Management and a BSc (Hons) in Geography. Laura is an associate member of IEMA (AIEMA), affiliate member of CIWM, and a qualified Environmental Management Systems auditor. She specialises in Corporate and Social Responsibility and Carbon Footprinting, along with a general background in environmental business support in the areas of utilities, distribution and process efficiency. Laura has industrial experience in the manufacturing, tourism and service sectors, and is also skilled in compressed air leak detection and thermal imaging surveys.
Philip Wanless holds a BSc in Geology & Environmental Science and an MSc in Environmental Impact Assessment, Auditing and Management. He has vast experience in construction engineering in the UK and overseas, with considerable experience in project management, delivery and finance. His environmental specialisms include Energy Management, Renewable Energy Technology and corporate training. Philip has carried out numerous resource efficiency audits, and recently prepared a transport audit for a large national company that identified over £4.5 million worth of potential savings.
Bob Clark, Executive Director of CREA, said, “climate change is making businesses review everything they do that might impact on the environment. The benefit is that in almost every case there are savings to be made which go directly to the bottom line in terms of reduced costs and increased profit.”
